Acclaimed Soil Health Author Schwartz to Keynote National Compost Conference
RESTON, VA. — Judith D. Schwartz, author of the critically acclaimed book, Cows Save the Planet, will be the keynote speaker at the US Composting Council’s 27th Annual Conference, Renew and Regenerate, the USCC announced today.
COMPOST2019, the national trade show and gathering of the U.S. compost manufacturing community, will be held January 28-31, 2019 in Phoenix/Glendale, AZ, and will focus on the business of running a compost facility, selling compost, policy issues around composting, collection at municipalities, college campuses and institutions, and compost’s role in soil regeneration and reversing climate change and soil regeneration.
Schwartz is a Vermont-based environmental journalist who has written extensively on the role of soil health and water in mitigating climate change and improving world food systems. She will bring a message of empowerment and hope to the compost community from her research and reporting on the issue, she says. Reporting on economics led her to the conclusion that healthy soil and clean water are, ultimately, the foundation of wealth, locally as well as globally.
“The conversation about climate change has been predominantly a discussion of fossil fuels and the big oil companies, and that leaves people with little sense of agency,” she said. “But once I understood the potential of improved soil to draw down carbon, retain water, support biodiversity and bolster nutrition, what stirred in me was hope.”
She will discuss her research, her work and the role of communicating the message of soil health in public discussions of climate change, food security and thriving economies.
