The Inland Empire Regional Composting Authority Receives 2012 Composter of the Year Award

February 21, 2013

Inland Empire – The Inland Empire Regional Composting Authority recently received the United States Composting Council’s 2012 Composter of the Year Award.

The Inland Empire Regional Composting Authority (IERCA) is a joint project between the Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA) and the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts. Established in 2002, the IERCA operates the Inland Empire Regional Composting Facility (IERCF) located in Rancho Cucamonga. The IERCF is the nation’s largest indoor composting facility. The IERCF utilizes one of the world’s largest biofilters and is fully compliant with South Coast Air Quality Management Districts’ stringent air standards. The facility’s urban location also saves thousands of miles of truck traffic and keeps the organics local for beneficial reuse. The compost creates healthy soils creating beautiful landscapes and saving water. 6,224 roof-mounted solar panels provide 1 megawatt of clean energy to help power the facility.

“The Inland Empire Regional Composting Authority’s Board of Directors is extremely pleased to be recognized for its contributions to the composting industry,” stated Jon Blickenstaff, IERCA Board Chairman. “The IERCF is environmentally friendly and cost effective. Congratulations to everyone involved for their dedication and support of this successful project,” Mr. Blickenstaff continued.

The US Composting Council awards program recognizes outstanding achievements in the organics recycling and composting industry. The Composter of the Year Award is awarded to a commercial-scale composting facility, public or private, which has displayed excellence in both compost production and marketing/distribution. The nominated facility must be in operation for a minimum of 5 years, process more than 10,000 tons of feedstock per year and be in regulatory compliance for the last 3 years. 2012 was the first year the IERCA was eligible for the award after passing its 5 year anniversary. The IERCF processes more than 200,000 tons of recycled products per year creating high-quality compost.
